Prof Francois Malherbe completed his medical studies at the University of the Free State Medical School between 1993 and 1998. Afterward, he pursued a decade of comprehensive general surgical training before joining the Breast and Surgical Endocrine Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town in 2014.

His main focus revolves around delivering holistic care for individuals grappling with various breast conditions, encompassing both benign disorders and the treatment of breast cancer. As the head of the Breast and Surgical Endocrine Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, Prof Malherbe oversees a bustling breast clinic and collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure precise diagnoses and tailored breast cancer treatment strategies.

Renowned for his expertise in breast care, Prof Malherbe played a pivotal role in advancing the sentinel node service at Groote Schuur Hospital, pioneering the introduction of SentiMag technology. He conducted the inaugural SentiMag-guided sentinel node biopsy in South Africa and remains actively engaged in expanding access to this procedure across South Africa and Africa as a whole. Prof Malherbe's passion lies in advocating for increased accessibility to sentinel node biopsy, promoting breast conservation through innovative oncoplastic approaches, and stressing the importance of early detection in symptomatic breast cancer patients. Annually, he performs over 100 breast cancer surgeries.

Beyond his clinical practice, Prof Malherbe has delivered numerous lectures both domestically and internationally. He has authored several scientific papers focusing on the assessment and treatment of breast disease.
